Christopher Clancy told jurors on Thursday that he saw no warning signs before the deaths of his three children, even as he said his wife had confided in late 2022 that she was struggling with postpartum issues after the birth of their third child. Testifying in Plymouth Superior Court during the Lindsay Clancy trial, he said Lindsay Clancy and Patrick Clancy had been raising what he called an "all-American family."
That testimony matters now because jurors are hearing competing accounts of Lindsay Clancy’s mental state before the killings on Jan. 24, 2023, while her lawyer Kevin Reddington argues she was misdiagnosed and overmedicated. Christopher Clancy said she was "having a hard time sleeping" and "just didn’t feel well," and that she had gone to the emergency room at least once seeking help for herself.
He also described a family life that, by his account, looked ordinary and affectionate right up to the end. Christopher Clancy said the family planned to go to Mass on Christmas Day, and he and his wife went to the Clancy home in Duxbury that morning for breakfast. He said Lindsay Clancy looked beautiful in a dress that day, the children were well behaved in church, and she later said she was really happy that she went.
He told jurors that she seemed especially devoted to Callan and was "very mothering," adding that the same was true when her older children were born. He said he once saw her get "a little frustrated" with Dawson at Thanksgiving dinner in 2022, but did not think she was being abusive when she helped him to his seat. Dawson was "a handful, but he was a good boy," he said.
The picture he painted is at odds with the horror that followed. Christopher Clancy said he did not observe anything that suggested she would hurt Cora, Dawson and Callan before he learned that Patrick Clancy had been told Lindsay Clancy strangled the children with exercise bands in the basement of their Duxbury home. He and his wife had even offered to take the children overnight in January 2023 so the parents could have a break, but Patrick Clancy declined.
Christopher Clancy said he and his wife had also been invited to dinner at the house on the night of the deaths, but could not make it because they already had plans. He said Patrick Clancy called later to deliver the news that changed the family forever. Lindsay Clancy, prosecutors say, then slashed her neck and wrists and jumped from a second-story window in what they have described as a suicide attempt, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. The question for jurors is not whether the deaths happened, but whether the defense can persuade them that the warning signs now being dissected in court were hidden inside a crisis no one around her fully grasped.
