César Gastelum was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon while broadcasting live in Culiacán, Sinaloa, turning a violent attack into a death watched in real time by thousands of followers. The 25-year-old influencer was hit in the head as he streamed with two friends, and the broadcast ended with his fall on camera.
The killing happened a few meters from the headquarters of the Fiscalía General in that Mexican state, a location that made the attack harder to dismiss as something hidden or distant. Gastelum, known to his followers as Cesarín, had about 600,000 followers on TikTok and also streamed on Kick under the username compasexor, where he built an audience around comedy, parodies, lifestyle content and what he called northern culture.
What his followers saw before the shot was a warning that arrived too late. Gastelum and the two men with him were in front of a KFC in Culiacán at 8:00 p.m., wearing orange clothing tied to delivery workers as part of a social media challenge. A motorcycle passed in front of them and the three appeared alarmed. One of them said, “Vámonos… la moto, la moto…” Another added, “No, me sentí bien mal. Esos chavos me dan miedo.”
The same motorcycle later came back, and one of its occupants fired directly at Gastelum with a small firearm. He collapsed instantly, and thousands of people watching live saw the killing unfold. That detail is what gives the case its weight: the threat was visible, the danger was voiced, and still the shot came in public, in front of an audience that could do nothing but watch.
Authorities said they were investigating the crime and maintaining a security operation, but they had not identified the attackers or established a motive at the time of the report. The case has already been compared with the killing of Valeria Márquez during a live transmission the year before, a comparison that underscores how exposure on social media can turn a broadcast into both a stage and a witness stand. For Gastelum’s followers, the question now is not what they saw, but who decided to turn a live stream into a killing and why.
