Damiris Dantas’ season is over. The Indiana Fever said Monday that Dantas underwent successful knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus in her left knee and will miss the remainder of the 2026 WNBA season.
The timing matters because Indiana was already leaning into a busy stretch, and the loss of Dantas removes one of its frontcourt options for the rest of the year. She had made 12 appearances and was averaging 3.3 points and 1.5 rebounds in 8.2 minutes per game, production that will now have to be replaced in smaller pieces rather than by one player.
Indiana had already been playing without Dantas for its last five games before the surgery announcement, so the Fever have had some time to adjust. The team’s frontcourt now falls more heavily on Aliyah Boston, Monique Billings, Myisha Hines-Allen and Mikayla Timpson, with Ugonne Onyiah added on Friday on a developmental contract as another depth option.
That roster hit came on the same day the Fever also had something to celebrate, with Caitlin Clark named the WNBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week. Clark’s run helped carry Indiana through three games between Jul. 27 and Aug. 2, a stretch in which the Fever went 2-1 and she averaged 25.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 9.0 assists on 53.7% shooting. But the good news did not change the reality that Dantas is out, and the team’s margin in the frontcourt is now slimmer for the final stretch of the season.
Dantas was a backup center and rotation piece, not a headline scorer, which is exactly why her absence matters now. Indiana has enough bodies to survive the spot, but not enough to pretend the loss is minor. The Fever have already started redistributing those minutes, and the rest of the season will show whether that depth is enough.
