La'Eva Morrison died after she was shot in the face late Sunday in Pittsburgh's Strip District, turning a reported shooting into a homicide before the night was over. She was 34 and from Braddock.
Pittsburgh Public Safety said officers from Zone 2 were called just before 11 p.m. to 27th Street and Liberty Avenue for a reported shooting. When they arrived, they found Morrison unresponsive on the sidewalk. Officers performed CPR until medics took her to the hospital in critical condition, where she later died.
The shooting put a busy corner of the Strip District at the center of a fast-moving death investigation. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office and a spokesperson for Pittsburgh Public Safety identified Morrison after her death, giving the case a name and a hometown as investigators worked through the scene.
Three people were detained at the scene and taken to police headquarters for questioning, but it was unclear whether any or all of them were expected to face charges. That leaves the hardest question still open: what led to the shooting in the first place, even as police said the investigation is ongoing.
