Sandfall Interactive wants to bring Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 to Switch 2, but the studio has put a blunt label on the work ahead: a big technical challenge. Tom Guillermin said the problem is not ambition. It is that the game leans heavily on Unreal Engine 5 features that do not currently work on the console.

That matters now because Switch 2 is only in its first year of life, and publishers are already testing how far it can go with modern games. Some of those tests have landed cleanly. Resident Evil Requiem and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are already being discussed as games the machine can handle with minimal compromises, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to arrive on Switch 2 at the same time as on PS5 and Xbox Series X. But the platform is also producing cautionary tales, from the indefinite delay of Borderlands 4 to the long slide of Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition, which was first announced with a 2025 release window and is now set for Aug. 28.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sits in the middle of that contradiction. The game won Game of the Year last year, and it is not a small project being scaled down for a handheld audience. It depends on Unreal Engine 5 features that Sandfall Interactive says are not ready for Switch 2 today, which makes the port a matter of engineering, not just scheduling. That is why the search around Clair-obscur Expedition 33 Switch 2 has sharpened into a question about feasibility rather than desire.

Alan Reynaud said Epic is already introducing features like Lumen Lite, which is easier to run than the standard Lumen, but he also made clear that those improvements do not arrive all at once. The team will have to weigh the updates coming from Unreal Engine before deciding what to do. In practice, that means some of the missing pieces may come later, but not soon enough to solve the problem now. For a smaller studio, that delay can be the difference between a port that moves forward and one that stays on the wish list.

The broader picture is plain. Switch 2 can run modern games, but it does not yet make every Unreal Engine 5 project portable on demand. Capcom and Square Enix may have found ways to make the console work for their biggest releases, but Sandfall Interactive does not appear to have the same room to absorb extra time, extra labor and extra compromise. Unless Epic’s next engine updates close the gap faster than expected, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on Switch 2 remains possible in theory and unfinished in practice.
