A man died early Saturday after a two-vehicle crash near Pendleton Pike and East 46th Street in Lawrence, and police are still trying to determine what led to the collision. The Lawrence Police Department said officers were called just before 2:30 a.m. about a traffic collision and found two heavily damaged vehicles when they arrived.
One of the cars was empty. In the other, officers found an unresponsive man who was trapped inside, and Lawrence Fire Department crews along with paramedics later determined he had died from injuries sustained in the crash. That left investigators with a scene that did not match the first version of events, because a search of the area turned up a person walking less than a mile away who officers said had injuries consistent with a crash.
Police detained that person after seeing bleeding from the eye and arm, along with multiple scratches, and the person later admitted being involved in the crash. The Lawrence Police Department has not said what happened in the moments before the impact, and it has not said whether the detained person will face charges.
For now, the case turns on what police can piece together from the empty vehicle, the dead man in the other car and the person found walking away from the scene. Lawrence Police said more information will be released as it becomes available, while the crash remains an active investigation in Lawrence, Ind.
