A Business Insider writer who has visited all 63 major U.S. national parks says five of them are the ones to visit in summer, a recommendation built around access, weather and what actually stays open once the busy season ends.
The timing helps explain why the list is drawing attention now. Summer brings longer days and better conditions across much of the United States, but it is also the season when roads fill up and iconic overlooks can be crowded before noon.
The five picks are Kenai Fjords National Park in Alaska, Isle Royale National Park, Denali National Park, Glacier National Park and Grand Teton National Park. Each one makes the case for a different reason. Exit Glacier Road in Kenai Fjords typically closes from late-October to Mid-May because of snow, so summer is the easiest window to get around. Isle Royale is open only from April 16 through October 31 each year and can be reached only by seaplane or ferry, with ferry service becoming sporadic after early September. Denali offers access to Mount McKinley, the 20,310-foot peak that rises as the highest in North America, while some roads, visitor centers, campgrounds and transportation services shut down after the summer months.
That logic holds in Glacier National Park too. The Going-To-The-Sun Road is roughly 50 miles long, but parts of it are typically closed until at least late-June because of heavy snow, which makes summer the practical season for seeing more of it. Grand Teton rounds out the list even with parts of the Taggart Lake trail under construction right now, a reminder that summer access can mean both better conditions and more people trying to use the same trails at once.
That is the tradeoff running through the list. Summer is the best time for several parks because more of the system is actually reachable, yet it is also peak road trip season, which means the same landmarks that look effortless in photos can be busy in person. For travelers deciding where to go next, the answer is not just which parks are beautiful in summer, but which ones still work when the rest of the country has the same idea.
