Jackie, the beloved bald eagle from Big Bear, remains in intensive care at the Ojai Raptor Center in stable but critical condition as her mate Shadow continues to defend the Big Bear Valley nest territory from a young visiting eagle. The bird has been seen around the nest in recent days, but Shadow has not shown any sign that he sees it as anything other than an intruder.
That is why fans following the live nest cam are watching the pair so closely now. Jackie is still recovering from the illness and setback that left her grounded on July 18, severely anemic and unable to fly, and the uncertainty around her condition has kept attention fixed on what Shadow does next while she heals.
Jenny Voisard said Shadow has shown no friendliness toward the visiting bird, adding that he has knocked it off the nest and issued warning calls. She said that points to a simple conclusion: he views the young eagle as an intruder, not a replacement mate. Observers cannot confirm the bird’s exact sex or age, but experts estimate it is under four years old, and Voisard said it is probably not mature enough to mate or take over a territory yet.
That matters because the nearby eagle has been appearing again and again, but the behavior on the nest has not shifted in a way that suggests Shadow is moving on. Voisard said his hormones will not change over until December or January, and that breeding season ending should ease territory defenses. She said he may eventually tolerate other eagles perched nearby without forming a bond, but that is a long way from replacing Jackie.
For now, Shadow will keep patrolling and defending the territory while Jackie works toward full physical recovery at the Ojai Raptor Center. The question is no longer whether the nest is being watched; it is whether Jackie will heal in time for the pair’s next season together, after a stretch that has already tested both birds and the people who follow them so closely.
