Apple Pay appeared to experience service disruptions on Friday, with users reporting failed transactions and transfer problems as complaints climbed sharply in the afternoon. Just after 5:20 p.m. ET, nearly 1,300 Apple Pay problems had been reported.
The complaints were concentrated around funds transfers and payment issues, the kind of failures that can stop people from adding cards, verifying payment methods or completing purchases. For anyone trying to use Apple Pay on an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad or Mac, the disruption was immediate and practical: a payment that should have gone through did not.
Many affected users said they saw an error message reading “Unable to Connect to Wallet Services.” That message generally means the Wallet app cannot communicate with Apple’s backend systems, which is why the problem can spread across payment functions rather than affecting only one step in the process.
Apple had not immediately acknowledged a widespread outage on Friday afternoon or explained what caused the problems, leaving users with a service that appeared broken but no public answer for why. The gap matters because payment failures are visible in real time: if the connection is down, the transaction does not wait.
Apple Pay and related Wallet services have had intermittent disruptions before, and most outages are resolved relatively quickly. That history may reassure some users, but it does not change the fact that Friday’s spike landed in the middle of live spending and transfer attempts, when even a short interruption can leave a cardholder stuck at the register or unable to move money.
The immediate question now is not whether complaints were real — they were — but how quickly Apple restores normal service and whether Wallet Services was the source of the problem.
