Emergency crews were responding to Miramar Air Base after an aircraft mishap involving an F-35 near MCAS Miramar around 10 a.m., and officials said the pilot ejected and was recovered.
A spokesperson for the base said, “We can confirm a Class A mishap involving a Marine Corps F-35B in the vicinity of MCAS Miramar.” Sky10 flew over the scene shortly after the crash as crews worked the area.
The label matters because a Class A mishap is the military’s most serious category, which means the event is being treated as more than a routine emergency even as the basic facts remain limited. The pilot’s recovery is the clearest sign so far that the immediate human outcome was contained, but officials were still describing the details surrounding the incident as unclear.
