Craig Melvin did not return to Today on Wednesday, July 29, even after a cohost told viewers the day before that he would be back in Studio 1A. Instead, the morning show again opened without him, stretching his absence through the full previous week and into the new one.

That is why Lindsay Czarnak is drawing attention now. She posted several family beach photos on Instagram on Sunday, July 26, including a picture with Melvin, Delano and Sybil, while Melvin himself had already been signaling that his time away was nearing an end. On Monday, he posted a beach selfie and called it his last full day of paradise, then teased that he would be back on Today sooner rather than later.

The return, though, did not happen when viewers were told to expect it. On Tuesday, Sheinelle Jones said Melvin would be back the next day, but on Wednesday she was still filling in alongside Hallie Jackson as the show noted that Melvin was missing from the crowd. For viewers who had already watched him miss Monday and Tuesday, the missed return added another layer to a week that had already required a rotating cast at the desk.

Melvin’s absence had been covered by several hosts over the past week, including Jones, Jackson, Willie Geist and Laura Jarrett. The bench was further strained because Dylan Dreyer was also off with her family, Al Roker said he would be traveling for an upcoming Today assignment, Carson Daly was filming new episodes of The Voice and Savannah Guthrie was working on NBC’s upcoming Wordle game show.

There was a simple reason the morning show looked so different: Melvin was on summer break with his family. But that explanation did not answer the immediate question hanging over Wednesday’s broadcast, which was why he was still out after a return had been named on air. The gap matters because live morning TV runs on timing, and when one anchor stays away longer than expected, the whole lineup has to keep shifting around it.

For now, the only firm conclusion is that Melvin was still out on Wednesday morning and his exact return date had not been confirmed. Until that changes, the story is less about a planned vacation than about a return that missed the mark by at least one day.
