Real Madrid and Fulham have reached an agreement for Gonzalo García that sends the 22-year-old to England for 40 million euros, but only for 70% of his rights. Madrid will keep a 30% share of any future sale and retain a preferential buyback option, preserving a measure of control over a player it has decided to let go.
García did not train with his teammates on Thursday, the clearest sign that his exit is moving from negotiation to reality. He arrived at La Fábrica in 2014 when he was ten years old, and his departure would close a long run through the club’s system that now appears to be ending with one of Madrid’s biggest sales.
The size of the fee matters because this deal shifts the terms of the exit in Madrid’s favor. Fulham had been pushing for full ownership at 70 million euros, while Real Madrid was initially asking for 30 million euros for 50% of the rights. The final structure lands in the middle on price but not on control: Madrid gives up the player now, keeps a slice of the next sale, and keeps a buyback route if the story changes again.
That compromise also fits the way the club has handled its academy talent this summer. Real Madrid has already received more than 120 million euros from the sale of academy players, and García’s move would sit among its ten most expensive sales if it is formally completed. The 40 million euros would also match what Manchester United paid for Raphael Varane in summer 2022, a benchmark that underlines how far this transfer has travelled from a youth-team file to a major sale.
García’s output explains why the market moved. Last season he scored 25 goals in 36 matches with Castilla and added eight goals and three assists in 39 matches for Real Madrid. Those numbers made him one of the more attractive names coming out of La Fábrica, and they also explain why Real Madrid was willing to sell while Mbappé and Endrick occupy the number nine role. What remains is the formal completion of the transfer, and that is the one piece still not confirmed.
