Demetrius Byrd was being held in a Miami-Dade jail after his arrest on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, following a Miami Beach bus incident that ended with a judge setting bond at $5,000. The 40-year-old, once a standout at Miami Central Senior High School and later LSU, now faces one case tied to the arrest and another court appearance on a separate warrant.
Police said Byrd got into an argument with another passenger on the bus before the confrontation escalated. In the arrest report, he allegedly pulled a silver multi-tool from his pocket, opened a blade and asked, “Who wants to die?” while walking toward the other passenger. The victim told police he tried to talk to Byrd in an effort to calm him down, but the situation kept moving toward a charge that a judge later found had probable cause during the bond hearing.
That hearing gave Byrd a $5,000 bond, but it did not end the legal trouble. He is also required to appear before a judge on an outstanding warrant in a separate domestic violence case, which means the arrest tied to the bus incident is only one part of the fight ahead.
Byrd’s name is already known in football circles. He led Dade County in receiving yards at Miami Central Senior High School, then went on to LSU before the San Diego Chargers selected him in the 2009 NFL Draft. The Chargers released him in 2010 after a serious car accident, and the latest arrest puts him back in court for reasons far removed from the field.
What makes this case stand out today is not just the charge, but the fact that Byrd now leaves the bond hearing with one legal problem addressed and another still waiting. The next hearing on the outstanding warrant will decide how much larger the case becomes.
