Supernova is heading to the stage for the first time, with Alan Cumming and Ewan McGregor set to lead its world premiere at Pitlochry Festival Theatre in Perthshire next summer. The run opens on 24 July 2027 and continues until 21 August, with tickets due to go on sale through the Pitlochry website on Wednesday 12 August.
The move gives Harry Macqueen’s 2020 film a new life in the theatre, and it arrives with real weight behind it. The film, which starred Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth as Sam and Tusker, earned two BAFTA nominations and built its story around a couple shaken by Tusker’s early-onset dementia diagnosis. That makes the stage version more than a simple transfer. It is a fresh attempt to turn a widely seen screen drama into a live event with two of Scotland’s best-known actors at the centre of it.
Cumming said he was excited to welcome McGregor, whom he called a fellow Perthshire home boy, to Pitlochry Festival Theatre for the production. McGregor said he was delighted to be working there next summer on Supernova with his old friend. Cumming also pointed to the creative team around the project, with John Tiffany, Steven Hoggett and designer Jamie Harrison joining Macqueen on a production he described as a love story, a meditation on life and death, and a visual feast.
There is still one important piece missing. The premiere is being sold as a major theatre event, but the rest of the cast has not yet been announced. That leaves the production launched with star power, a clear date and a defined home, but still some of the company to be filled in before opening night. For now, the draw is simple: McGregor and Cumming will be on the stage, and the full shape of the adaptation is still to come.
