Apple is set to launch the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on Sept. 12, while holding the entry-level iPhone 18 until Spring 2027. The split means the next iPhone family will not arrive all at once, and autumn buyers will face a choice between paying for the Pro tier or waiting months for the standard model.
The move matters now because the iPhone 18 release date is no longer a single fall event. For more than a decade, September has been the steady launch window for a new iPhone family, and Apple is now breaking that pattern in a way that pushes the most expensive phones into the season when upgrade demand is strongest. The Pro models are the higher-margin option, and Apple is using them to capture the holiday sales window first.
That shift also gives Apple a clearer way to shape what customers see in the store. Consumers who would normally buy the standard model in autumn are expected to face an estimated $200 premium if they move to the Pro version instead. In other words, the delay does not just change timing; it changes which phone many buyers can afford to choose.
There is another reason the split matters. iOS 27 will launch with the iPhone 18 Pro, and the beta versions show that 12 GB of memory is the minimum needed for the full suite of tools. Those tools include the ability to run Large Language Models locally and privately, which means the latest Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features are tied to the devices with enough memory to handle them.
That creates a sharper divide inside Apple’s lineup. The full suite of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features is not limited to the iPhone 18 Pro alone; any older iPhone with 12 GB of RAM can also support those tools. The practical cutoff is memory, not the name on the box, and that is why the later release plan matters beyond simple timing.
Apple’s own rationale is rooted in revenue and production. Separating the launches lets the company maximize revenue while easing the pressure of a single autumn rollout, and the later entry-level iPhone 18 is expected to help protect Apple’s finances by removing the equivalent of the iPhone 17’s $799 price from the initial iPhone 18 portfolio. The updated timing, noted on Tuesday July 28, points to manufacturing efficiencies tied to the later release date.
The next date that counts is Sept. 12, when Apple is set to bring out the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. After that, the standard iPhone 18 will remain the one people are waiting for, and the delay says as much about Apple’s pricing strategy as it does about its product calendar.
