The timing matters because the threat is not limited to one quick burst. The Storm Prediction Center has placed most of the D.C. region under a Marginal Risk, Level 1 of 5, for severe weather on Monday, but that lower tier does not rule out a sharp storm. Steve Rudin said anything that develops may bring brief heavier downpours, and skies are expected to turn partly cloudy as temperatures fall through the 80s and into the upper 70s.
That risk becomes more noticeable Tuesday, when the chance for showers and thunderstorms increases across the D.C. area. Some of Tuesday’s storms could become severe with damaging winds and heavy rainfall, and the entire region is under a Slight Risk, Level 2 of 5. Highs will reach the lower to middle 80s in very humid air, which can help storms build faster and make them feel more oppressive for anyone outside or on the road.
Monday’s setup still has a contradiction built into it: the severe risk is only Level 1 of 5, yet the forecast still warns that storms may strengthen enough to produce damaging winds. That is why the latest outlook is more than a routine shower forecast. Even limited shower and storm chances Monday evening and overnight could matter if one stronger cell moves through at the wrong time.
For people in the D.C. region, the real concern shifts to Tuesday’s commute, when storms are more likely and could be strong in the afternoon. Wednesday should be mostly dry with lower humidity and a lingering shower or thunderstorm possible, and Thursday looks more comfortable with sunshine, lower humidity and temperatures in the low to mid-80s. For now, the clearest answer is that Dc Weather is not settling down right away, and the next round of storms could be the one that interrupts the day.
