Major Rugby has issued a nationwide thyroid medication recall for 12 packages of levothyroxine sodium tablets sold under the Major and Cardinal brand names. The tablets were distributed nationwide beginning in January 2025, and consumers were told to return the medicine to the point of purchase.
The recall was announced in a letter sent to retailers earlier this month. Levothyroxine sodium tablets are used to treat hypothyroidism, enlarged thyroid glands and a type of thyroid cancer, and the affected products require a prescription.
Major Rugby said taking the recalled tablets is not likely to cause adverse health effects, but the pills are still subpotent, meaning they deliver less medication than they are supposed to deliver. That matters for a drug that is often taken daily and where even a small shortfall can leave a patient underdosed.
The recalled packages include 25 mcg, 50 mcg, 75 mcg, 88 mcg, 112 mcg, 125 mcg and 150 mcg tablets, all in 100-tablet packages with 10 x 10 unit dose blisters. People who find the product in a medicine cabinet were advised to consult their doctor or physician, but the immediate step remains the same: return it to the point of purchase.
Major Rugby’s notice leaves one thing unanswered: how many patients or prescriptions may have received the subpotent tablets. For now, the recall is nationwide, the product list is specific, and the company is telling customers not to keep the medicine on hand.
