Roberts said she did not really know what she wanted at first, only that she wanted the gown to feel very vintage-inspired. She described the mood she was after as looking like “a ghost—a little antique ghost doll,” a sharp brief that became a silk chiffon dress with 25 yards of fabric dyed to a custom shade called antique rose. Lhuillier called it “ethereal, romantic, and vintage-inspired,” and the finished piece matched that description without losing the sense of something carefully built by hand.
The strongest reaction came from Kelly Cunningham, who ran up to hug her daughter and said, “Stunning. Absolutely stunning.” Roberts, looking at the assembled family and friends gathered for the reveal, said, “I feel like an elfin fairy,” a line that fits the distance between her first uncertainty and the dress that finally answered it. She also said the process had the ease of people who could sit together, brainstorm and create something as a group, adding that “the synergy was so there.”
