He says: ‘Children don’t need new genders, they need normal parents.’”
What made the claim travel so fast was not evidence, but repetition. Other users kept circulating the same line on Facebook, Instagram and X, while reverse image searches turned up memes carrying the quote on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and X. Snopes said searches of DuckDuckGo and Google found no news outlets reporting that Russell had ever made the remark, and searches of Google Books, Newspapers.com and YouTube turned up no added context or source for it either.
The pattern matters because this was not the first time Russell had been tied to a made-up political remark. In March 2026, users shared a similar rumor falsely saying people had boycotted him after he said children should not be allowed to watch cartoons with LGBTQ+ themes, and there was no evidence for that claim either. Earlier fact checks also had to swat away a separate false claim about Donald Trump and a Kennedy Center Honor, a reminder that Russell’s name has become a regular target for recycled online fabrications, especially in stories that mix celebrity, culture-war language and outrage.
There is still one unanswered question: who first invented the quote. Snopes said the earliest posts it found attributing the line to Russell dated to at least May 2026, but it did not identify the original source. It also said it emailed Russell representatives at United Talent and would update the report if they confirmed anything, which leaves the claim in the same place it began — widely shared, repeatedly reposted, and still unsupported by evidence.
