Samsung unveiled its new foldables with a number that will make even loyal buyers pause: the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra can climb to $2,700 when it is loaded with 1TB of storage. That puts the top version only $200 below the Galaxy Z TriFold, a phone Samsung priced at $2,900 when it released it in January.
The search around Samsung Galaxy pricing is sharp today because the company is not just launching new hardware. It is also resetting expectations for what a premium foldable can cost, and the biggest bill now lands at the far edge of the market, not the entry point. The new Z-series phones keep the same starting price, Samsung said, but the cost rises fast once storage moves up.
That is the detail that gives the launch its weight. The base Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra starts at $2,100 for 256GB, which means the jump to 1TB adds $600. Last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 topped out at $2,500 for the same 1TB tier, so the newest model is $200 more expensive at the top end even before buyers start comparing it with Samsung’s most extreme foldable. The original Samsung Galaxy Fold debuted in 2019 at just under $2,000, while the iPhone X launched in 2017 at $1,000, a reminder of how far the ceiling has moved.
Samsung said the higher prices reflect increased memory and component costs. It also pointed to new Titanium Flex displays, larger batteries and better 50-megapixel ultrawide cameras as reasons the Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra improved. The pitch is familiar: better durability, better design and better features. But the bill keeps rising faster than the entry sticker, and the premium gap is getting harder to ignore.
That is where the friction sits. Samsung called the Galaxy Z TriFold a super-premium device in limited quantities, then pulled the plug on sales in March after it had been on sale for less than three months. The result is a market where the company’s most ambitious foldable is no longer easy to buy, while the new Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra still reaches almost the same price when fully loaded. For now, Samsung has not said whether it will bring the Galaxy Z TriFold back into wider sale, leaving the company’s highest-end foldable strategy looking expensive and unfinished at the same time.
