The first Other Mommy horror movie trailer has landed, and it wastes no time getting under the skin. James Wan and Rob Savage are talking about the film only after that unnerving first look, which centers on young Bela and a sinister presence that looks exactly like her mother.
That framing matters because the story is built to be experienced through Bela, a seven-year-old girl whose ordinary family life starts to break apart as the other mommy closes in. The film adapts Josh Malerman’s Incidents Around the House, and Jessica Chastain plays the mother figure in a dual role, a setup that makes the trailer’s central image even harder to shake.
Savage said the movie is told predominantly from Bela’s point of view, with the audience filtered through her understanding of the manipulative whisperings from other mommy. He also said the trailer’s striking image at the 87-second mark is the kind of moment viewers will not forget anytime soon, which fits a campaign that seems determined to leave the rules out of the frame and let dread do the talking.
Wan, who said he read Incidents Around the House after the guys at Atomic Monster sent it over to him, described the process as a constant balancing act. He said figuring out how much to reveal is usually the last thing being tweaked in a horror movie, and added that the goal is to peel back the layers of the onion without giving away so much that the mystery disappears.
That is the friction built into this trailer. It is promoting a psychological horror film by refusing to explain its own mechanics, even as it leans on one of the genre’s oldest tricks: showing just enough for viewers to feel a threat, then stopping before the threat makes complete sense. For a story anchored to Bela’s fear and uncertainty, that restraint is the point.
The result is a first look that does more than advertise a release. It sets up a movie where the real question is not what the other mommy looks like, but how long Bela can hold on to her version of events before the thing wearing her mother’s face takes over the room.
