Whitney Cummings says a Donald Trump joke was cut from the broadcast of her Mark Twain Prize set, turning a comedy bit into the kind of offstage dispute that can follow a filmed event long after the audience has gone home. She said the line was removed from the version scheduled to stream on Netflix on Tuesday, July 21.
Cummings made the claim on the Saturday, July 18 episode of her Good For You podcast, where she said she ended the joke with the line, “Donald Trump couldn’t make it tonight. He got caught in sex traffic.” She performed the set at Bill Maher’s Mark Twain Prize ceremony at the Kennedy Center on June 28, and said the joke had already leaked by someone in the audience before the broadcast.
That is why the cut matters now. The ceremony was meant to preserve a night of comedy for a wider audience, but the broadcast version will not match what some attendees heard in the room. Cummings said she was told, “We need to cut it from the broadcast,” and also said she was warned, “He will sue you.”
A Netflix spokesperson told Variety that it is usually their preference not to cut jokes, but said the Kennedy Center has the contractual right to do so. That answer leaves the key question hanging in plain view: who actually made the final call on the edit, and under what approval process did the joke disappear from the broadcast if not from the room itself?
Cummings then pushed back publicly and said on X, “I was super clear that Netflix did not cut anything from my Mark Twain prize set. Netflix always supports comedy and comics. Quit spreading rumors ya weirdos.” Her version narrows the dispute without ending it. Netflix says it did not want the cut, while the broadcast still omitted the joke she described.
Cummings also framed the issue as bigger than one line. She said she believed the Mark Twain Prize was a moment when comedians should criticize elected officials, which is what makes the edit more than a routine standards note. The joke is expected to be absent when the broadcast streams, and the unresolved part is not whether the line was controversial, but who had the power to remove it.
