LeBron James has pushed his free-agency decision deep into late July, and the delay is now pressing toward August. That has left the NBA waiting on one choice before it can finish its next moves.
Commissioner Adam Silver said last week that the league office cannot finish the schedule until James chooses a destination, and Rich Paul answered Monday night with a blunt message on the latest episode of his podcast, Game Over, with Max Kellerman: they are not going to be rushed. Paul added that it is James' choice to make, and when he makes the choice, he will make it.
The hold-up matters because James is still the hinge point for several offseason plans. The Cleveland Cavaliers are waiting on another LeBron decision. The futures of Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga remain murky because of James. The Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat each have a plan for what to do if James chooses them and a column B if he does not.
That is a strange place for a player who is 41 years, 6 months and 21 days old and no longer viewed as a top 10 player to still have this much leverage over the market. He is not the version of LeBron who could carry a roster to the NBA Finals by himself, yet the last few weeks have seen him effectively delay offseason planning across the NBA. His decision has been in charge of everything during the last three weeks.
Summer League is over, and the league usually starts to drift into hibernation around this point as coaches and executives take vacations for most of August. LeBron is encroaching on that time as well, which is why the wait feels heavier than a normal free-agency pause. His ongoing watch has dragged through much of July and may spill into the month when most of the league tries to disappear for a while.
The unresolved part is simple: James still has to choose, and nobody outside his camp is saying when that will happen. Until he does, the NBA keeps building around one decision that can still rearrange the rest of the summer.
