Tickets for The Odyssey in Imax 70mm have disappeared at AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York City, leaving only wheelchair spots for the sold-out run through August 12. The rush has pushed some moviegoers into a resale market where scalpers and scammers are already circling.
Elijahturner011 summed up the scramble on July 20 with a plea that sounded less like a post than a last call: “Can someone release a ticket to me, please?” The user said they had been trying forever to land a seat, had been “scammed left and right,” and just wanted “one ticket to 70mm,” adding that it was hurting their heart to miss out while hearing that some people did not even show up.
The pressure is easy to see in the numbers. AMC Lincoln Square 13 is one of 41 Imax 70mm screens worldwide and the only one in New York City, which makes every seat there matter more than a standard screening. The sold-out list now includes all the 2 a.m. showings through Aug. 2 and all other listed showtimes through August 12, while the tickets themselves cost $33 before any resale markup.
That scarcity has created a familiar market for bad actors. Dozens of moviegoers have posted desperate messages on r/NYCmovies, a community built around moviegoing in New York City, and its moderators have a rule against scalping tickets. Tessa said the group reports users who try to sell above face value, bans accounts when scalping is flagged, and warns people to check post history, ask for proof, and use an in-person exchange when possible. She also said online transactions should go through PayPal’s Goods & Services protection and noted that most legitimate users with extra tickets simply refund them and let the community know they are dropping them.
Even with those guardrails, the pressure is not easing. Tessa said some users actively offer to pay above face value, and there are still bids for the $33 tickets. She also said the worst cases involve people pretending to have tickets they do not have at all, then deleting accounts and making new ones when they are reported.
Whether AMC adds more showtimes soon is the unanswered piece that matters most now. An AMC spokesperson declined to comment, which leaves Elijahturner011 and everyone else chasing seats in the same place they started: refreshing posts, watching for cancellations, and hoping a ticket appears before the window closes.
