Finn Jones is keeping Danny Rand in the conversation. Speaking to fans at Florida Supercon this past weekend, the actor said, “I’m Danny Rand until I die,” and floated the idea of his Iron Fist taking on Shang-Chi in a future Marvel scene.
The comment landed now because Marvel is already stitching the old Netflix corner back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe piece by piece. Jessica Jones and Luke Cage returned in Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again, and Season 3 is set to add Elektra Natchios and Danny Rand, even though Marvel has only committed to that third season so far.
Jones did not sound like he was pitching a farewell lap. He said fans have seen Danny “a lot in the kind of street-level New York world” and suggested it would be “kind of cool” to take him “a bit more mystical, a bit more powerful,” maybe even to “fight Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) a little bit.”
That pairing makes sense on paper, and Marvel Comics has already done the work for it. Iron Fist and Shang-Chi first shared a story in Master of Kung Fu Annual #1 in 1976, then teamed up again and again over the following decades, with another standalone team-up in 2018. But the screen version would have to bridge a bigger gap than the comics ever did: Shang-Chi has been framed around cosmic-scale stakes, while Iron Fist has stayed grounded in the same street-level New York setting that defined the Netflix era.
That contrast is part of what makes the idea interesting and part of what makes it uncertain. Danny Rand’s mythology reaches into K’un-Lun and the dragon Shou-Lao, but Iron Fist also carries the baggage of a first season that opened to abysmal reviews and drew criticism for its writing, its action scenes, and Jones’s take on the character. Marvel has not said it plans to put the two characters together on screen, and the current roadmap only goes as far as a third season of Daredevil: Born Again. For now, Jones has done the only thing he can do: remind everyone that he is not done with Danny Rand, and that the next fight he wants is the one Marvel has still not chosen to make.
