Marie-France van Heel is about to be pulled into the center of British politics on Monday, when Andy Burnham becomes UK prime minister after Sir Keir Starmer bowed out. For a woman who has spent most of her adult life out of view, the move will put Andy Burnham's wife on a stage she has largely avoided.
The timing is what is driving the search interest now. Van Heel has been Burnham’s wife for 25 years, and the couple’s private life has always sat beside his public one: they met in 1989 at Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam College, bonded over The Smiths, married in 2000 and went on to have a son and two daughters. She also has a bichon frise named Axel, a small detail that fits the low-key life she has kept while her husband’s profile rose.
Her own career has been substantial. Van Heel spent much of it in marketing, worked at BSkyB, founded MVH Marketing and later became chief strategy officer at Heavenly, which worked on campaigns for HSBC, England Rugby and the. She is now chief marketing officer at Iduna Infrastructure, and that is where the public interest sharpens. Iduna Infrastructure owns large parts of Manchester’s electric vehicle charging network, so when questions were raised about a possible conflict of interest, Burnham distanced himself from decisions about Iduna and declared his wife’s job.
That friction matters because the issue is not whether van Heel has worked; it is whether her role could cast a shadow over decisions touching a company tied to infrastructure in Manchester. Burnham’s answer as Greater Manchester mayor was to step back from those decisions, but the fact that the concern still surfaced shows how closely private family life and public office can collide once a spouse is part of the political machinery.
Van Heel has largely stayed out of the limelight since Burnham first became an MP in 2001, and that is unlikely to change because she is suddenly famous. What changes on Monday is the scale of the scrutiny.
