The tribute lands now because the anniversary post puts one of Hollywood’s most enduring tragedies back in view. Wagner and Wood were first married from 1957 to 1962, then married again in 1972, before Wood died in 1981 at 43 after a boat trip to Catalina Island.
What makes the post resonate is the way it collides with the story that has followed the family for decades. Wood’s death was initially ruled an accidental drowning, and L.A. coroner Dr. Thomas Noguchi concluded that she had fallen into the water and tried to board a dinghy. Noguchi said scratch marks were found on the inflatable boat’s side and believed she clung to it but was weighed down by the heavy parka she was wearing and could not pull herself back up.
Yet the case never settled into a simple public memory. Some people have assumed Wagner was involved, a narrative Natasha Gregson Wagner has called outrageous and completely unacceptable. In the 2020 documentary Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind, she said she believes her father was not involved in her mother’s death and said she knows he would have given his life for Wood if she had been in distress.
Wagner, now 96, has spent decades as one of the most familiar faces on television and in film, but on this day the post is less about his career than about a private date that never stopped carrying public weight. He made the same gesture last July, sharing another throwback photo on Instagram and writing, “Always a special place in my heart. Happy Anniversary Nat! More Than Love,” while tagging the couple’s children. This year’s message does not answer the old questions around Wood’s death, but it does show that the anniversary still belongs to the family first, even as the rest of Hollywood keeps looking back.
