Gunsmoke ended on CBS in 1975 without warning the people who made it. James Arness said he learned the drama was being canceled by reading the trade papers after 20 years playing Matt Dillon.
That mattered because Gunsmoke was not a fading title limping to the finish. It had run 20 seasons and 635 episodes, and in its final season it still ranked 26th among primetime programs in the United States. Arness said the network never told anybody it was thinking about canceling, even though the cast had finished the 20th year expecting to return.
The series had launched on September 10, 1955, and became the longest-running primetime live-action scripted American series of its time. Arness played U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon in every episode, which made the abrupt ending feel less like a routine programming change than the closing of a network-era institution. CBS had already seen the show survive a near-cancellation in 1967 after fan protests and intervention by William S. Paley.
By 1975, though, the network had decided the run was over. CBS vice president Alan Wagner put the rule bluntly: it was better to get rid of a program one year too soon than one year too late. That logic did not ease the landing for the cast, who learned the news from the trade papers rather than from the people who owned the show.
The final episode, “The Sharecroppers,” aired on March 31, 1975, and centered on Ken Curtis’s Festus. Matt Dillon barely appeared, which gave the end a strange shape: the series finished not with a farewell built around its star, but with an ordinary installment that left the lead almost on the sidelines.
CBS replaced the slot with Rhoda and Phyllis. The timing also fixed Gunsmoke in television history: Law & Order tied its 20-season record in 2010, The Simpsons passed its episode count in 2018, and Law & Order: SVU moved beyond it in 2019. But the most revealing detail remains the one Arness gave years later. After two decades on the series, he said the network led the show downstream and then dropped the ax when it was already too late for anyone inside Gunsmoke to prepare.
