Valve’s Steam Frame is being sized up against the Meta Quest 3 as a stronger-spec VR headset, with higher refresh rate screens, more RAM and a faster processor than Meta’s current model. Matt Swider, in a comparison of the two headsets, said the Steam Frame is being built to do more than the Quest 3 while still leaving buyers without the two numbers they care about most: price and release date.
That search is happening now because the Meta Quest 3 is already on sale, while the Steam Frame is still only an upcoming device. Valve has not officially disclosed when it will ship or what it will cost, even as it is being positioned as a follow-up to the Valve Index and a device for streaming high-fidelity VR games from a PC.
The hardware split is clear enough to explain why the comparison matters. The Steam Frame is lighter than the Quest 3, and its screens are expected to run at 120Hz or 144Hz, above the Quest 3’s 90Hz. It also adds expandable storage and can play games installed on the unit itself, while Valve is also expected to support an entire Steam library of games in 2D plus a set of certified games. On paper, it looks like the kind of headset that aims above the Quest 3 rather than around it.
But the pricing question hangs over all of that. Valve said at the time of the headset’s announcement with Upload VR that it was aiming to supply the Steam Frame for less than the $1,000 full-kit price it charged for the Valve Index. That leaves room for a lower entry point, but not much comfort for buyers hoping the 1TB model stays far from four figures, especially with the Quest 3’s 512GB version now set at $600 after Meta’s price rise.
For now, the Steam Frame remains a promise measured against a headset people can buy today. The comparison favors Valve on specs, but the real test will come when Valve finally puts a price and a date on the table.
