An Anne Arundel County woman claimed a $50,030 Md Lottery prize on July 7 after a May 18 Bonus Match 5 ticket turned into a quiet family secret, then a birthday surprise. Her son had kept the winning ticket for safekeeping until June, when he finally slipped the news into a card.
The payoff came from a ticket her son bought in May after she sent him to Giant in Glen Burnie to pick up her numbers. She had chosen random plays for Bonus Match 5, Pick 3 and Pick 4, and one of the Bonus Match 5 lines matched all five numbers drawn that evening for the $50,000 top prize.
There was a little more on top of that. She also matched three numbers on two other lines, which added $15 apiece and brought the total to $50,030. The extra money did not change the fact that the big prize came from the five-number match, and it did not change the way the win was revealed: her son waited until her birthday in June, put a note in a card that read, “You won $50,000,” and let her open it then.
That delay mattered because the ticket had been sitting with him all along. He checked it the next day, saw the match, and held onto it instead of telling her right away. When she finally heard the news, she said, “The numbers just felt right,” and later added, “I tried to keep calm, because of health reasons, but I was so excited,” before making clear, “I didn’t want to do cartwheels and stuff.”
The story also brings a small local bonus for the store that sold the ticket. The Giant Store at 7940 Crain Highway in Glen Burnie will receive a $500 bonus for selling the top-prize ticket, a reminder that even a single winning slip can ripple beyond the person cashing it in. She said she plans to use the money to buy a new car, a practical ending to a prize that took a month and a family birthday card to come into view.
