Melissa Gilbert says she will not return to When Calls the Heart next season, ending Georgie McGill’s run on the show for now. She said she was told the decision came down to “budget issues,” and she wished her friends in Hope Valley a successful Season 14.
The announcement matters because Gilbert joined the series in Season 12 as Georgie, a former Mountie forensic investigator whose history with Bill Avery quickly gave the role a following. She has said the Georgie and Bill storyline gave her “butterflies” in her 60s, and fans were quick to say they were sad to hear she would not be back.
Gilbert posted the news on Instagram and made the point plainly: she said the answer to whether she would return was no. With When Calls the Heart set to return for Season 14 in 2027, her departure leaves one of the show’s newer relationships off the board before the next season even begins.
That has not stopped questions about why she is leaving. Some fans questioned the explanation and speculated that her exit could be tied to Timothy Busfield’s ongoing legal case. Busfield was indicted in New Mexico on four counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor, has denied the allegations, and has pleaded not guilty. He is scheduled to stand trial in May 2027. Gilbert, meanwhile, has said during the legal proceedings that she needed to step away and “lean into that truth fully” as her family navigated the situation.
What is clear is that Gilbert’s departure is being framed as a budget call, not a creative one, and that leaves Georgie McGill in a limbo the show has not yet explained. She could be written out, left off-screen, or brought back later, but none of that has been announced. For now, the cleanest reading is the simplest one: Gilbert is out for Season 14, and viewers who hoped to see Georgie and Bill again will have to wait for a possible return that has not been promised.
