Andy Serkis has defended the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum after criticism over its lack of diversity, saying the film will not be built as a box-ticking exercise. He said casting will happen only where it is relevant, and that the project is already trying to answer the complaints without turning away from the world Tolkien created.
The comments matter now because The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is still in development and is due in December 2027, long before audiences see whether the casting choices hold up on screen. Serkis is directing the film, which currently includes Anya Taylor-Joy, Leo Woodall, Kate Winslet and Jamie Dornan, while Elijah Wood will return as Frodo Baggins and Ian McKellen as Gandalf. Peter Jackson is producing the film, and Serkis said the story sits between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy and books, giving the project a built-in audience even before the next wave of casting is announced.
Speaking this week, Serkis said the film is a deep dive into the psychology and history of Gollum before he became Gollum, with a central question about the origin of Bilbo Baggins’s ring. He also said the hunt takes place in two different dimensions, suggesting a story that will move beyond a straightforward fantasy chase. The point of friction is that Serkis did not dodge the criticism. He said there have been complaints, and that the film is partly acknowledging them, but he rejected the idea that the production should become a politically correct exercise in casting for its own sake. He added that Tolkien was shaped in part by Norse mythology and described The Shire as feeling very white, a remark that underlines how closely he is tying the project to its source material even as he faces pressure to broaden representation.
