High-quality renders of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 leaked this week, and they show a phone that looks built to be used while closed. The body appears wider and shorter than the current Fold shape, with a 5.5-inch cover screen in a 16:10 ratio that should feel closer to a normal smartphone than the narrow slab buyers have been living with on prior Galaxy Fold models.
That is why the leak is drawing attention now. The design is the clearest look yet at how Samsung may be trying to fix the part of the Fold that has always felt compromised: the outside screen. Reviewers and users have long said the Z Fold 7 cover display was fine for quick replies and notifications, but awkward for two-thumbed typing, landscape content or apps that assumed standard phone proportions. A wider front screen would change that immediately, and the leaked renders suggest Samsung finally knows it.
Android Headlines was the first to show the new images, while Tom's Guide said they line up with Samsung's own teaser imagery that hinted at a squatter foldable silhouette in at least three colorways. SamMobile noted that earlier leaks had only shown case molds and real-world photos, which left little sense of the actual dimensions. This time, the proportions are clear enough to see the shift: a broader shell, a shorter frame and a layout that puts the phone closer to everyday handset ergonomics when it is shut.
There is still a catch. Ice Universe made a hinge claim this week saying Samsung may have substantially reduced the inner display crease, and that matters because a smaller crease can make the unfolded panel feel cleaner but also changes how the hinge supports the screen through movement. If that trade-off is real, the wider cover screen may solve one problem while making Flex Mode less steady than before. The inner display is reported at 7.6 inches in a 4:3 ratio, so Samsung is trying to balance a more usable outside screen with a tablet-like inside panel that still has to hold its shape in use.
A Naver forum post cited South Korean supply-chain sources and was covered by Trusted Reviews this week, adding to the sense that the design is nearing its final form. The standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 was previously called the Fold 8 Wide in early leaks, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is expected to continue the line in a more familiar direction for existing Fold users. Samsung is expected to announce both devices at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22 in London, with buyers likely to see them a week or two later. If the leak holds, the real test will not be the size of the screen on paper, but whether Samsung has finally made the closed phone worth using without costing the foldable its best trick.
