Shirley Ballas says the moment has finally arrived: she is judging alongside her son, Mark Ballas, on Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro. For a family that spent decades on the floor and then in the franchise orbit, the new pairing puts a long dance lineage back in the spotlight.
That lineage starts with Corky and Shirley Ballas, who welcomed Mark in May 1986 after marrying the year before and later retired from professional dancing in the 1990s. Corky has competed twice on Dancing with the Stars, while Shirley now serves as a judge on Dancing with the Stars: The Next Pro, giving the family a direct role on both sides of the franchise.
Mark was born in Corky’s hometown of Houston, then was raised in Great Britain from age 4 to 21 before later moving back to the U.S. He attended the Italia Conti Academy of Performing Arts in London and made his debut on Dancing with the Stars in 2007 at age 21, carrying forward the dance habit his parents built long before television made the name familiar.
The story behind that path is less polished than the stage lights suggest. Shirley said Corky was a cook and chef when they met in the mid-1980s, and she has also said he did not start dancing seriously until he was 21. Even so, the pair went on to compete as partners, win several championship titles together and collect several ballroom dance victories before stepping away in 1996. The arc is unusual, but it explains why Shirley treats his later success less as a surprise than as proof that the work can start late and still reach the top.
What remains unresolved is not whether the family belongs in the dance world. It is which of their titles and competition wins mattered most in building the reputation that eventually reached Mark.
