Pokémon Go is giving players a free choice between Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y through Genetic Mastery, the Timed Research tied to Go Fest: Global 2026. The two-day window runs July 11 and 12, and the decision determines which form’s Mega Energy, encounter and candy rewards players take home.
The reward path is front-loaded with smaller prizes before the split. One step offers 2,026 Stardust, a Bouffalant encounter and 2,026 XP. Another adds 26 Gastly Candy, a Gengar encounter and 6 Gastly Candy XL. A later step gives 3 Rare Candy, a Tropius encounter and 2,026 Stardust. After that, players must choose. The selected form grants 300 Mewtwo X/Y Mega Energy, a Mewtwo encounter and 26 Mewtwo Candy, and the unlocked Mewtwo starts with the first Mega Evolution level already open for that form.
That matters because the research only lasts two days, while the Mega forms do not line up the same way in raids. Mega Mewtwo X is in raids on Saturday, July 11, and Mega Mewtwo Y follows on Sunday, July 12. Players who want to match their research pick to the raid schedule can do that, but the better overall attacker is usually the Y form, which is generally stronger by a small margin.
The catch is that strength alone does not settle the decision. Mega Mewtwo X has one edge that the Y form does not: it gains fighting typing, which makes it the better pick for fighting-type use even though Mega Lucario is stronger in that role. So the choice comes down to timing and purpose as much as raw power. Players chasing the most efficient psychic attacker will lean toward Mega Mewtwo Y, while anyone wanting a fighting-type option, or simply trying to line up a form with the raid available that day, may prefer Mega Mewtwo X.
Genetic Mastery also finishes with enough rewards to matter beyond the choice itself, including 6 Mewtwo Go Fest stickers, 3 Mewtwo Candy XL and 1 Elite Charged TM. The main limit is still the same one: the research closes after July 12, and the first Mega Evolution for either form requires 7,500 Mega Energy, far more than the 300 awarded by the free path. That leaves players with the start of a Mega build, not the full unlock, and makes the event pick worth thinking through before the window shuts.
There is one more question hanging over Mega Mewtwo itself. Datamines have pointed to a possible unique Adventure Effect, but Scopely Explore has not formally announced it. For now, the only certain move is the one inside Genetic Mastery: pick X or Y, claim the free rewards, and decide whether this weekend is about immediate raid use, long-term power, or the form you want to build first.
