A magnitude-6.0 earthquake struck beneath the west side of the Island of Hawaii on May 22, 2026, and it was felt across the State of Hawaii. The quake, southeast of Captain Cook and 14 miles, or 23 km, below the ocean surface, was the largest of a recent run of deep earthquakes that residents across the islands have noticed.
That is why earthquake now has become a search for Hawaii residents: the shaking was not limited to the area near the epicenter. Deep earthquakes in Hawaii can be widely felt statewide, even when they start far below the ocean floor, and the May 22 event was followed by a magnitude-4.6 quake on June 2 northwest of Keauhou and a magnitude-4.7 quake on June 9 east of Pepeʻekeo, both of them widely felt.
The deeper quakes matter because Hawaii sits in the middle of the Pacific plate, far from the plate boundaries that produce roughly 90% of the world’s seismic activity. In Hawaii, the weight of the Hawaiian Island Chain can flex the brittle oceanic crust and upper mantle below, setting off earthquakes that can spread shaking across the state. The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has recorded deep earthquakes like these since it began monitoring Hawaii’s volcanoes in 1912.
But the picture is not as simple as volcanic activity alone. Most of Hawaii’s day-to-day seismic activity occurs within volcanic systems, yet the widely felt deep earthquakes on May 22, June 2 and June 9 were not directly related to magmatic processes. That friction is what makes them notable: they are part of Hawaii’s seismic life, but they do not fit neatly into the usual volcanic pattern.
A different event arrived on June 16, when a magnitude-4.6 earthquake struck south of the Island of Hawaiian at a depth of 11 miles, or 17 km. That quake was part of the Pahala seismic swarm, which is thought to be related to hot spot magma transport pathways, not the flexure mechanism behind the earlier widely felt deep earthquakes. For residents, the unanswered question is not whether more shaking can happen in Hawaii. It is which of these deep quakes will be felt next, and whether it will come from the weight of the islands, the volcanic system, or the swarm beneath Pahala.
