Xero launches Ultra for Australian businesses outgrowing basic tools

Xero has launched Ultra in Australia, a new product tier for Australian businesses growing in size and complexity. The plan is built on its existing accounting, payroll and bank reconciliation tools, but adds more room for entities, transactions and the kind of reporting that starts to matter when a business no longer fits neatly inside a basic package.

Angad Soin said some businesses reach a point where their tools stop growing with them, and that is the customer Xero is chasing here. Ultra adds consolidated reporting for multiple entities, extra scenario-modelling, cash flow forecasting, heightened customer support, migration help and upgraded data restoration services designed to fix errors without a full reset. That puts it squarely in the gap between simple accounting software and the fuller ERP systems that many larger businesses eventually consider.

That gap is real because the companies Xero is targeting often end up weighing vendors such as Oracle or SAP when their needs become more complex. Xero is trying to keep them inside its own ecosystem for longer, while MYOB has its own ladder in Australia with Solo for sole traders, flagship software for SMEs and ERP options through Acumatica. The launch matters now because the market for business software has been pulled into a harder conversation about value, complexity and what growing customers actually need from their systems.

The timing also leaves room for an awkward comparison. Shares in the ASX-listed business traded at $72.61 on Wednesday, down from $178.40 at the close of trade exactly one year earlier, as investors kept a wary eye on SaaS businesses during the so-called SaaSpocalypse. Against that backdrop, Ultra reads as both a product push and a signal that Xero wants to defend its place as businesses outgrow the basics rather than lose them to a larger system.

What Xero has not yet given is the one thing many customers will want first: when Ultra will be available and what it will cost. Until that is clear, the launch says more about where Xero wants to compete than how far it can go there.
