Royce Keys is using a local stop to turn a debut into a bigger message. The WWE newcomer said his Royal Rumble appearance felt like a dream come true as he promoted Friday Night SmackDown, which is coming to the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City.
Keys stopped by News 9 on Monday and said he has just hit his sixth month with WWE. That matters now because he is still new enough to be framed by his first big moment, but established enough to sell the next one. For Keys, the Royal Rumble was not just another date on the calendar. He said debuting there was one of the top four events in WWE and one of the company’s pinnacle pay-per-views, the kind of stage that gives a new performer instant visibility. That ease in front of the crowd comes with a cost behind the curtain. Keys said WWE life is nonstop, all year, 52 weeks a year, and can mean three or four working days a week depending on the schedule. He described a 26-hour travel day, then said he may be hiding in his room for a day before jumping in the car to get to the venue. The company, he said, is the place to be because of the production, the people working there, staff and talent, but he was just as direct about the sacrifice that keeps that machine moving.
Keys also signaled how quickly a new name can become part of the weekly rhythm. He said he wants to bring his partner and his boy Jacob back, and he pointed to the family ties around him as part of what made the transition feel natural. What he did not spell out was how he will be used when Friday Night SmackDown reaches Oklahoma City, and that is the part fans will be watching when the show arrives at the Paycom Center.
