A 55-year-old Gainesville woman died early Sunday after her Acura Sedan slammed into stopped traffic on southbound Interstate-75 in Pasco County, then hit a tractor-trailer. Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 2:52 a.m. near mile marker 279, where vehicles were already backed up from an earlier, unrelated crash.
The woman was driving in the center lane when she failed to stop and struck the rear of a Toyota Camry before colliding with the tractor-trailer. She died at the scene. The 34-year-old Tampa man driving the Camry and the 27-year-old Kentucky man driving the tractor-trailer were not injured.
That earlier stop in traffic is the part that turns this from a routine rear-end collision into a fatal one. The Camry and the tractor-trailer were not moving when the Acura Sedan reached them, which means the crash was not about speed alone but about a lane of traffic that had already been frozen by something else. Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene, but the cause of the unrelated crash that first stopped traffic was not released.
What remains unresolved is simple and important: how a driver approaching a known line of stopped vehicles did not slow in time. The wreck near Wesley Chapel left one woman dead, two other drivers unhurt and another question open about the crash that set the chain in motion.
