World News Tonight led NBC Nightly News by 1.968 million Total Viewers, up from a 1.517 million margin the week before, while NBC posted 108,000 viewers in Adults 25-54 and 65,000 in Adults 18-49 compared with 129,000 and 39,000 for ABC, respectively. Against CBS, the gap was even larger: World News Tonight finished 4.363 million Total Viewers ahead, a figure that sits just below the 4.4 million advantage cited in the headline, and the season-to-date lead over CBS was 4.262 million.
That kind of spread helps explain why the program remains the most-watched newscast in Total Viewers and in the key younger demos. Season to date, World News Tonight had 8.328 million Total Viewers and ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 10th straight year, while also holding the top spot in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for a seventh season in a row. It airs from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. ET on ABC, and the numbers suggest its audience remains broad enough to keep it well ahead of NBC and CBS even as the weekly totals move around.
What the figures do not explain is why this particular week produced another gain. The ratings show the result, not the cause, and that leaves the next update to answer whether the lead holds at this level or shifts when Nielsen Media Research posts the following week’s numbers.
