PlayStation is closing the PS Store on PS3 in select markets this year, then taking the PS3 and PS Vita stores offline worldwide next year. Once that happens, new content purchases will stop on both devices, but people will still be able to download games and add-ons they already bought for the foreseeable future.
The timing matters because the change is no longer a distant cleanup of old hardware. It starts this year, and the global shutdown follows next year, which means players who still use those systems have only a limited window left to buy anything new on them. Phil Hornshaw is named on the announcement page, and the notice makes clear that the store is being wound down as Sony Interactive Entertainment shifts resources toward newer devices.
The reason given is technical as much as commercial. PlayStation Store is being updated to support modern commerce systems, including newer payment processing standards, and PS3 and PS Vita can no longer keep up at the level required. That is why the company says these two platforms, once an important part of PlayStation history, are now being left behind as the store evolves.
There is still an odd split in what players are being told. Store access is ending, but previously purchased content is not going away with it. For the foreseeable future, downloads of earlier purchases will remain available, even after new buying shuts off. That keeps ownership alive in one sense while closing the door on new transactions, which is the kind of halfway exit that usually means a legacy platform is being retired carefully, not abruptly.
The unanswered part is not whether the shutdown is happening. It is how long the remaining market-by-market rollout will take before the first PS3 customers lose store access, and whether the final transition next year will happen quietly or force a larger cleanup for anyone still keeping those consoles connected. For now, the message is simple: if a PS3 or PS Vita purchase has been waiting on the wishlist, the clock has already started.
