Mara Brock Akil says she wants $50 million to make a Girlfriends film and bring the full cast back together in Los Angeles. She says the idea is alive, the cast is willing and the only thing blocking it is the money.
The timing matters because Girlfriends just marked its 25th anniversary, turning a long-running wish into a fresh conversation. The series ran for eight seasons from 2000 to 2007 and starred Tracee Ellis Ross, Jill Marie Jones, Persia White, Golden Brooks and Reggie Hayes, making the prospect of a return one that would carry real weight for viewers who have waited years to see that group together again.
Akil said there has been some interest in the project, but she does not think it is worth chasing every door unless the financing is there. She said she knows how to tell the story the right way, but she also made clear that she will not force it at a smaller scale just to get it done. If the money comes, she said, the film would move with the entire cast.
That is where the story runs into its practical limit. Akil said the cast wants to come back and is open to it, but the budget target is the barrier. In her view, $50 million is what it takes to tell the story she wants, and anything less risks pulling the project away from what would make it work as a film rather than a compromise. She also said she can move on to new work if the project never clears that mark.
For now, the clearest answer is that Girlfriends is still a reunion idea with momentum, but not yet a movie. Akil is holding to the number she says is needed, and until that changes, the cast return that fans keep asking about remains a matter of financing, not enthusiasm.
