Meta has begun embedding Muse Image into WhatsApp and Instagram, turning on by default an AI image tool that can use public Instagram posts and reels to generate new content. The company said the feature is rolling out first in limited countries, putting the change in front of users now rather than at some distant launch date.

The move matters because the feature does not wait for a separate opt-in. A public Instagram account can be used to help generate AI content, and users can tag another public Instagram account in the Meta AI app to create new reels, posts or stories that reuse part or all of published photos, videos or reels. Meta said tagging a username lets Meta AI use public photos to build a visual that is ready to post, and it said users can control how their content can be tagged for AI creation and turn it off.

Muse Image is Meta's first image-focused model from Superintelligence Labs, and the company says it uses advanced reasoning to better understand complex prompts and blend multiple photos into high-quality creations. That puts WhatsApp and Instagram at the center of a wider push to fold AI into everyday products, with the feature slated to reach Facebook, Messenger and advertisers through Meta Advantage+ creative next.

But the rollout also exposes the part that will unsettle some users: public content can be reused unless the setting is switched off, and users will not be notified when their images are remixed using AI. Meta said it will still send notifications when a public account reuses a user's content for remixes, sequences, stickers and templates, and it added that if an Instagram account turns private and stays private for more than 24 hours, reels, posts and stories using that account's content will be deleted from Instagram. Already existing content created by others will remain up, which means the safeguard arrives after reuse has already happened.

For Instagram users under 18 with public accounts, only followers can reuse the media if their account settings allow reuse. Meta is offering a narrower path for minors, but the broader design remains the same: the feature is on unless users change it. That is the real shift today. Public Instagram content is no longer just something people post and share inside the app. With Muse Image, it can become raw material for AI creation across Meta's products, starting now in limited countries and likely expanding from there.
