A child climbed out of Tiana's Bayou Adventure at Disneyland on Saturday, July 4, while the ride was still in motion, and was uninjured. Disneyland cast members immediately stopped the attraction after the child got out at the bottom of the lift hill.
The timing makes the episode stand out. It came just days after TMZ reported a separate June 21 incident on the same ride, when video showed a 13-year-old boy tumbling down the water-covered track as the log flume ride vehicle raced ahead of him. In both cases, the ride moved on until someone in the park saw a rider leave the vehicle and the response kicked in.
Disneyland said cast members handled the July 4 occurrence appropriately. That matters because the basic rule is simple: never get out of a moving theme park ride. The rides are designed to be safe, but the safety depends on riders staying inside the vehicle until the ride ends, and on employees stopping the attraction the moment they spot someone out of place.
Employees are trained to do exactly that. When they see a rider on closed-circuit TV exit a vehicle before the ride is over, they are supposed to stop the ride, help the rider get to safety and check whether medical assistance is needed. Disneyland rides can also stop for far less dramatic reasons, including a lost hat, a dropped cell phone or a rider taking longer than expected to get on or off.
That is what makes the two incidents on Tiana's Bayou Adventure harder to dismiss as routine. The July 4 child was not hurt, and the attraction was stopped right away, but the sequence leaves one question hanging in plain view: how does a rider manage to climb out of a moving flume ride twice in a matter of days, even with procedures meant to catch it fast?
What is clear is the response. What is not explained is what changed, if anything, after the July 4 episode beyond the immediate stop. For now, the ride's safety system appears to have done its job once the child was seen, but the repeated exits show how quickly a safe ride can become a dangerous one when someone leaves the vehicle early.
