XBOX is starting the biggest restructure in its history, cutting approximately 3,200 jobs through FY27 and shifting four studios to new management. About 1,600 role eliminations are taking place today, making this the sharpest break yet in a business that has spent years expanding.
That is why the news is landing now. The company is not describing a routine trim; it is describing a reset large enough to change reporting lines, ownership and staffing across the business. Mojang and King will now report directly to the head of XBOX, while Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions are returning to management and becoming independent studios with their IP, catalog and runway for future games.
Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have entered terms to join new ownership with funding to finish and grow Senua and State of Decay 3. At the same time, Arkane’s management in France is beginning the required consultation with its Works Council to review potential strategic options. The company is also moving to cut the distance between leadership and some of its biggest teams, a sign that the reorganization is not just about headcount but about control.
That makes the contradiction unavoidable. XBOX says the business is not healthy and points to a platform organization that is now 40% larger than it was at the start of this generation, after years of expansion that began in 2018. It also says none of its first party publicly announced games or projects are being cancelled. The cuts, in other words, are meant to show discipline without admitting a retreat from the slate that still exists.
The broader math is still severe. The company says it entered Gen 9 with a smaller install base and a higher cost structure, while betting on Game Pass, multi-platform release plans and a wider content portfolio to grow. It also says the business loses 64 cents for every dollar invested in a typical year, a number that helps explain why the reset is being pushed now rather than later.
What happens next is not a single-day layoff story but a year-long unwind. XBOX says its team will be reduced by approximately 3,200 through FY27, which means the roughly 1,600 cuts announced today are only part of the total. The remaining reductions are not broken out, but the direction is clear: the company is trying to slim down, pull key studios closer to direct oversight and keep its announced games alive while it rebuilds the business around a smaller base.
