Stars Reach hits testing milestone, sets full wipe before early access

Stars Reach has reached the point where its world has to be cleared out before the next stage begins. Raph Koster said the MMO needs a full wipe as it moves toward early access this summer, a reset that marks the moment when testing gives way to something closer to a public launch.

That is why players are watching now. Koster, the designer behind Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, has spent decades chasing the same idea he first pitched in the late 1990s: a living online world that feels less like a game menu and more like a place. He said Stars Reach is the game he has wanted to make for 30 years, and that the dream begins in earnest when early access opens this summer.

The project is built around scale and systems rather than a scripted path. Stars Reach spans thousands of planets linked by wormholes that can appear and disappear over time, and players can mine asteroids, terraform landscapes, build cities, craft starships, run businesses, become entertainers, establish governments or simply explore. Koster argues that MMOs are virtual places in which you put games, and he says the technology has finally caught up to that ambition.

That ambition also comes with a pointed view of the genre’s history. Koster says Stars Reach is not coming for World of Warcraft’s lunch, even as he argues that WoW narrowed what an MMO could be by making one style of online play dominant. His case is not that one giant should be replaced by another. It is that the space has room again for something stranger, broader and more reactive.

What remains unclear is the wipe itself: Koster has said the game has reached a pivotal moment in testing and that a full reset is required, but he has not laid out exactly what will be erased or whether any progress will carry over. For now, Stars Reach is entering the phase where the last temporary version of the world gives way to the one players will actually be asked to live in this summer.
