South Jersey towns are changing their July Fourth plans one after another as temperatures are forecast to top 100 degrees through Independence Day. Some are canceling parades and concerts, others are pushing events earlier, and Bordentown Township is postponing fireworks until Aug. 4.
The scramble has turned a holiday weekend built around outdoor crowds into a test of how much summer celebration people can safely handle. Delanco canceled a Thursday evening concert featuring the Nathan Renson Quartet and said it will be rescheduled later, while Haddon Township scrapped its July Fourth parade because of the heat and humidity forecast for Saturday.
That same township said its Happy Birthday America Celebration fireworks would still go on Friday night at the Haddon Township High School stadium, and Crystal Lake Pool would be open and free to township residents, their extended family, friends and guests during the heat wave. The message from local organizers is clear: keep the parts of the holiday that can be made safer, and move or drop the rest.
Not every town made the same call. Haddonfield kept its Independence Day Parade on Friday morning, but postponed the block party and drone show that were supposed to start at 5 p.m. later in the day. Magnolia moved its Fourth of July Fair to 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, immediately after the parade, and Oaklyn pulled its annual July Fourth parade forward to 9 a.m., two hours earlier than planned.
Paulsboro canceled its annual Fourth of July parade outright. Taken together, the changes show how quickly a heat wave can reshape a holiday calendar across South Jersey, with some towns retreating from outdoor gatherings and others trying to beat the worst of the day by starting earlier or trimming the afternoon from their plans.
The unresolved question now is how many more communities will follow. For the towns that have already moved, the next dates are set only in part: Bordentown Township has an Aug. 4 fireworks date, while Delanco said its concert will be rescheduled later and several other events have simply been pushed into the safer hours of the morning or left off the weekend schedule entirely.
