Highway 12 was shut down in both directions east of the Rio Vista Bridge on June 30 after a crash involving a Nissan sedan, a semi-truck and a van left several people injured and trapped inside their vehicles. The collision happened around 3:40 p.m. and quickly turned a stretch of road near Rio Vista into a rescue scene.
Two occupants from the Nissan sedan were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The drivers of the semi-truck and a box truck were not reported injured, but at least two of the vehicles ended up in a nearby ditch as crews worked to pull people free and clear the roadway.
That is why the crash drew immediate attention: both eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 12 were closed temporarily, and traffic was left to back up while emergency responders handled the scene. CHP officers remained there to manage traffic control and carry out a full investigation, which means the road reopened before the cause of the crash was publicly settled.
That missing piece matters. CHP had not yet released an official cause of the crash, even as the damage and injuries were already known.
