Rob Lowe says a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel is being written, and he is sounding hopeful but not ready to call it finished. Speaking on The Kelly Clarkson Show, he said the team is working on a script and added, “I’m trying to get it done, but I’m excited.”
That is the first real sign of movement on a project fans have wondered about for years, and it comes more than 40 years after the original film put Lowe and the rest of the Brat Pack on the same poster. Lowe said the movie still matters because, in his words, it is “such a great snapshot of your 20s,” a line that explains why the idea keeps coming back whenever the cast gathers or the film gets fresh attention.
The original Joel Schumacher film starred Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Andie MacDowell, Andrew McCarthy, Ally Sheedy, Mare Winningham, Judd Nelson and Emilio Estevez as a group of recent college graduates trying to figure out adulthood. Lowe has said that everyone wants to do the sequel, but the script has to be right before anything can move forward, which is why the project is still in the writing stage rather than on a set.
There has been false start before. NBC was developing a St. Elmo’s Fire series in 2019, but that modernized take never materialized, and Lowe said in 2024 after meeting with the studio that the sequel was still in very early stages. The cast reunion in Andrew McCarthy’s 2024 documentary Brats only added to the interest, and Lowe has said the documentary made the idea of revisiting the film feel even more alive.
For now, the answer to the question around this sequel is simple: it is being worked on, but the story still has to earn its return. Until the script solves that part, St. Elmo’s Fire remains a conversation rather than a finished comeback.
