The timing gives that family map added weight: the third season is already underway, and viewers need the relationships straight before the plot starts moving in earnest.
The opening of the series makes the point from the start. It flashes back to Viserys I Targaryen being chosen as his grandfather King Jaehaerys I Targaryen’s heir to the Iron Throne, even though he was not the only option in the line.
